On-Chain
Also known as: Blockchain-Based, On-Ledger, Immutable Record
Any transaction, operation, or data that is directly recorded and verified on a blockchain network.
On-chain refers to any action, transaction, or piece of data that is executed and permanently recorded on a blockchain. On-chain activity benefits from decentralization, immutability, and transparency but often comes with trade-offs in speed and cost. It includes token transfers, smart contract executions, and DAO votes. Unlike off-chain processes, on-chain operations are verifiable by all network participants and stored in the distributed ledger. Optimizing on-chain usage is crucial for scalability, leading to innovations like rollups, sharding, and modular chains.
